Did you get a copy of PES 2017 this Christmas? Struggling? Don’t worry, we’ve got you covered! Read on for our top 5 tips for players new to PES…
1. Make use of the Training mode
The training arena should be your first stop if you’re new to PES. Here you can practice the basics such as shooting, passing and defending whilst also taking on some more advanced challenges in the skill games as your ability develops. It’s a good place to hone your skills before diving into master league, myClub or even PES League.
The super-cancel is a very useful control to master. Holding down both the triggers will cancel the action your player is about to perform. Not only is this a useful method of cancelling any mistakes you make- a misplaced pass or ambitious shot perhaps but it can also be a good way of tricking the opposition by using the super-cancel to take control of your player to make a run rather than leaving them to run where the AI wants them to go.
3. Advanced instructions
PES 2017 offers a variety of different ways to play the beautiful game. The advanced instructions allow you to customize the way your team attacks and defends. The tactics range from Barcelona’s ‘Tiki-Taka’ to Jurgen Klopp’s ‘gegenpressing’. In the gallery below you will find all the attacking and defensive advanced instructions and how they affect your style of play, Here at PES Fan a personal favorite is to combine ‘hug the touchline’ with ‘centering targets’ creating a big threat from the wide areas, however there’s plenty of options to choose from so pick what suits you best!

4. Corner kick strategies
Corner kick strategies are another way to customize your play style in PES 2017. There are a range of ways to set out your team in both offensive and defensive styles for the best chance of success. When attacking you can choose from dash, train, far post or 6 yard box and when defending you can choose from Man to man or zonal marking or a mixture of the two. We like to use the dash tactic when attacking and the man to man marking when defending but again choose the options that suit you best.
5. Tailor your formation
Choosing your starting lineup is a hugely important task in PES. Selecting the right formation and the players to fit into that formation is a big contributor to success. In PES 2017 you have total freedom to customize your formation to your heart’s content. In PES players have a preferred position in which they are at their highest overall rating, change their position however and their rating will change. For example Arda Turan is rated 84 overall when playing as an attacking midfielder or AMF, yet he will drop to a 74 overall rating when played as a left wing forward or LWF. Luckily however, PES gives you the option to move players around the pitch to create your own unique formations. When hovering over a player hold X on playstation or A on Xbox and you can move the player anywhere on the pitch using the analog sticks. You can also use the square button on playstation or X on Xbox to change the position of the player. For instance a midfield player positioned below the halfway line can play as either a Center midfielder (CMF) or as a defensive midfielder (DMF), a defender over the halfway line can be used as a CMF or an AM and the list goes on. Changing player positions can have a positive effect on overall rating as you can move a player into his preferred position. Below is an example of combining both player positioning and rating to create a new, custom formation.
